Movement

Movement is a performance piece created in the fall of 2024. It's a collaboration of poems I wrote, spliced and layered together with vocals and garage band beats that lead my physical movements.

This piece speaks to the struggle of mental disorders that cluster one's brain with intrusive thoughts and mental spirals. This performance is intended to invite the audience into the brain of someone struggling with anxiety and depression. I often find myself in this space where I feel as if my brain is unraveling while my body keeps moving "normally" through life. Movement gives voice to this experience.

Movement was shown on an iPad placed on a shelf drilled into the wall. This display was enclosed in a booth that was meant to create an individualized experience for the viewer. As the performance addresses intimate struggles of my mental health, I wanted to create a personal one-on-one connection with the viewer as they directly listened to my words through headphones and within a private space. I also wanted to provide a space to have dialogue on mental health struggles, so the ceiling was a space to draw, write, or leave a message to each other.
